So as I just said the first thing to do is installing the IPX protocol. Next I'll tell you the simple configuration of this protocol to make it work with C2.
Let's install IPX.
In Control Panel, open up Network
Connections:
Right click on Local Area Connection, and click on
Properties, and this dialog results:
Click on the Install... button, and this dialog
appears:
Click on Protocol, and click Add.... After
a few seconds, a dialog similar to this will appear:
Click on the NWLink IPX/SPX... protocol, and click
OK. The protocol will be installed.
Once you're done, you'll return to the Properties dialog, only this time the
new protocol will be listed:
You can uncheck the NWLink NetBIOS protocol as C2 won't use it. Click on Close, and it's likely you'll then need to reboot your machine for the installation to complete.
Now select the NWLink IPX/SPX protocol and hit Properties.
Don't change the first network number (or at least make it look like in the next screencap). Then select the 802.3 frame type and enter as network number 00000001:
You'll ofcourse have to do this on every computer you're planning to use in your C2 LAN gaming!
But that's not all... The most important point is most certainly the C2 installs you'll be using. They'll all have to be the same. Same cars/add-on cars and same tracks/add-on network tracks. And have the V2 patch installed! So your best move would be to create a clean install of C2 apart from your modded C2 and use that clean install for network gaming!
Don't forget you can still use glide/d3d/ddraw wrappers with network games. I think that's all.

Hmm... This is interesting Tosh, I may give this a try to see if I can get it going.

I try this, but it does not work....
I have WinXP SP3 installed on both computers. Try different releases of C2 (with patch v.2 and not), but nothing work.
But if install on both computers Virtual PC and start Win98 in it, all work fine (C2 network game i mean).
Someone have any ideas how to get C2 LAN game work in XP?
Very sorry for my english.

Try start carmageddon on all machines with carma2_HW.exe file (if you use 3dfx mode) or shortcut to carma2_HW.exe with "-d3d" option if you use Direct3D mode. And DON'T start it with carma2.exe.
It helped me to start C2 LAN game.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of follow up :S
I've been talking with Teunoticus about this problem and sadly was unable to find a working solution.
Thanks for your tips though they can be helpful for other people.
It's a known thing that the C2 launcher (carma2.exe) can screw up things on some systems (esp. sound on Windows Vista). It doesn't surprise me that it might interfere with the LAN gaming process etc.
Virtual PC is also always an alternative, good to know it all work fine, plus IPX has a real support on this system.

For game with friends by Internet i use OpenVPN (there are a lot of manuals how to configure it in internet, so don't ask me, but i say, that you need to use "dev tap" instead of "dev tun" in configuration file). OpenVPN works fine (tested with 3 peoples + me) with different versions of C2.
if HAMACHI works with IPX protocol, i think it can be usefull too.

Man... what you just told is awesomeness!
I never really sought more into VPNs for C2 because I thought C2 was too tricky for these sorta softwares to make it work over the Internet.
I'll definitely have a look at this and will try to output a tutorial or such.
About Hamachi I guess people have already tried to play C2 but weren't successful.
Thanks for the post btw.

Thanks a lot for trying guys... it was worth it! I tried all of your ideas and now I know for sure how to set up a LAN gane for C2 and C1:
C2: Follow all the steps Tosh describes at the head of this threat (IPX cobfiguration, same versions [toshs version definitaly works] etc.)
And then do what Irmo said: start C2 on all machines with the "carma2_HW.exe file (if you use 3dfx mode) or shortcut to carma2_HW.exe with "-d3d" option if you use Direct3D mode. And DON'T start it with carma2.exe".
--> then you´re able to host abd join, even if it´s different XP versions!
C1: install IPX, but leave the configurations as they are (I think there is no IPX on Vista yet, sorry). Then make sure that the only ACTIVE network connection is the LAN-connection. If others are active (wireless, hamachi) it won´t work (don´t ask me why... it took hours to figure that out!). Deactivate them. If all PCs are linked properly together you´re ready to go! And C1 is worth it.. you have peds even in multiplayer!
So I hope every Carma fan can now play all the games of the series via LAN and maybe we find a way to do it over the internet soon.
Amen!

Hey Teunoticus, thanks a lot for your feedback!
Actually we have moved a lot on this point as well. I released a mod named BBQC2 supposed to help people have LAN/net games with C2. But over at CFe, there's also a very nifty tool that let C2 works over LAN and net (with or without hamachi) on both XP and Vista, and doesn't require IPX as it actually replaces that protocol with UDP. It's called CarmaUDP, only available for C2.
About C1, an opensource C1 is in the works as shown on CFe as well. We can obviously bet on a modern netcode at some point ;)
